Skateboarding is a life style. Sports are for those who like to dance in the end-zone. When you land a trick, your bros don't come over and pat you on the ass!

We're sure most skaters don't use ass-patting as a form of congratulations, but we're also concerned with where you choose to buy skate equipment. Sporting goods stores carry inferior skateboards just like toy stores and box-stores. All these places carry unbranded boards with unbranded parts.

Sure brand names cost more, but with skate products brand names also carry "quality". A $25 complete may seem like a bargain, but when it breaks on a landing, you're likely to get hurt. Or how about when those cheap trucks snap? Nothing good comes from buying crap.

We encourage you to shop around and get the best price you can find, but be wary of prices that seem too good to be true. Finding a complete board at Target for $100 less than a board at the skate shop is an easy find. The problem is all in the quality. Good quality is worth paying for. It's like putting cheap-ass tires on your car. It might be good for your wallet, but when a tire blows at 75 MPH you're likely to be fucked! Same is true when buying cheap skate goods.

Only your local skate shop sells quality brands that hold up to the punishment of an few hours on a ramp, street or pool. Wal-Mart is a good place to buy socks, but leave those crappy skateboards on the shelf!

Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.

Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.

Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
