Simplify your skate life and discover what indie skate shops have to offer. The high-pressure world of corporate retail is the opposite of skate culture and those who live it. No one wants a clerk wearing a vest & name tag trying to sell you a #25 skateboard with no-name components.
I'm willing to bet that in addition to amazing products and selection, your local independent skate shop probably supports a vibrant skate scene. They might sponsor a team or be affiliated with a local skate park. That little hole-in-the-wall shop may not look as flashy as some other retailers, but they'll do things for you that no other store would even consider.
Everyone wants to make money, but indie skateboard shops want to keep you stoked on skating. Their business relies on repeat customers who won't go to mall stores and sporting goods stores. They want you as a customer and they will offer great products, advice and be a hub for the local skate scene. Nothing beats a cool little skate shop that rocks!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
