Using flashy ads and catchy marketing, giant retailers try to lure customers into their SuperStores. They make us believe that these enormous arena-sized stores offer great prices and one-stop-shopping. If you need tube socks or a new flick on DVD, they may be the right place to shop. But these stores keep prices low by selling many inferior products at reduced rates.
Skateboard equipment isn't a discount item. You either get a name-brand item or you buy crap. Name brands will be more expensive than the cheap boards in SuperStores, but they won't break, fail or cause injuries the way those cheap inferior boards do. Cheap equipment breaks easily and always at the worst time. No one wants to go to the ER because they saved some money on a poorly made skateboard.
Name-brand equipment lasts longer, performs better and will make you a better skater. If you can't rely on your skateboard 100%, you won't have the confidence to go big. Buy smart, go big, and have a shit-ton of fun!!
Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
