If you think surviving in the retail business sounds easy, try opening a skate shop. It's a cut-throat business that survives by passion and dedication - the same things that made you an accomplished skater. Nothing worthwhile is easy and hard work can pay off.
What if your local skate shop went out of business?
I'll bet you'd find some killer sales before they bite the dust. But what about the future?
Many skate scenes revolve around a good independent skate shop who's owner aggressively cultivates his business. That means he/she goes the extra mile to make YOUR shop experience the best it can be. You might not think so, but you owe that shop your support if they've helped you out and hooked you up.
You don't have to clean their bathrooms or sweep the floors, but you should tell everyone you know about the shop. Get your friends to shop there instead of discount stores, mall shops and anonymous mail order sites on the web. Your local shop is the only place that cares about skaters and their scene. Shops like this also help build and maintain scenes.
Still many folks shop at box-stores like Wal-Mart & Target, sporting goods stores like Dicks & Olympia and mall stores like PacSun for skateboards and equipment. That crap has to stop!
These uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Clue-in and buy from your local skate shop. They are the only ones who care about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
