"If you're not part of the solution, then you're part of the problem."
If your local skate shop is having a tough time surviving in our crappy economy - it's YOUR problem too! Why is that? Because when they go out of business all the contests, demos and camaraderie of hanging at the local shop is gone!
Supporting the local skate shops is a vital part of being a part of your skate scene. Tell everyone about the shop and the benefits of shopping there. Explain the pitfalls of discount stores, toy stores and on-line retail sites. None of these places will do anything for you except take your money.
Every dollar spent buying skateboards at a crappy discount stores is money that your local skate shop would benefit from. The skate shop needs you as much as you need them. Believe me YOUU need a local skate shop.
When was the last time Wal-Mart brought the Element team to your park for a demo?
Have you ever entered a skate contest sponsored by Toys R Us?
Would Mike V show up at your park with a giant "Kmart" banner on his Jeep?
Independent skate shops provide a lot for the skate community outside of products. They host contests, demos and have the "industry pull" to get pros to come to your town. Your friend who works in the sporting goods section of Target won't put Koston in your park.
These uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.
Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.
Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
