Remember the last Birdhouse film, The End? No? Well, it was over 10 years ago, so that might account for it. On the other hand, that flick had some sick entertainment value to go along with the skating. Definitely a tough flick to live up to. If you missed it, no sweat. Now we're at The Beginning.
Filmed on location at secret spots, hideaways and vertical desert monoliths the world over, The Beginning took a much more traditional approach to this skate video. Gone are the theatrics and over-the-top insanity. In their place are some of the best skateboarding parts you've ever seen. This is a great film and although we miss the zest of the Vivid Video girls from The End, the skating in The Beginning makes up for the lack of prancing porno princesses. Perhaps the aging Mr. Hawk now discerns a larger gap between skateboarding and bountiful babes.
Not to stray too far from the basic intent of skateboard film reviewing, we'd like to encourage up-and-coming skate directors to reinstate the bond between skateboarding and porn. Check out Porn Star Skateboards... these guys have made the connection quite apparent. Lets bring a touch more seXXX into skate vids.

See what I mean? This works! Thanks for listening.
The Beginning opens up with swooping panoramic views of a massive half pipe in the desert. Winds howl and sand swirls like a Hollywood movie set. Unfortunately, this is not for effect - now the crew has to break out the brooms. Perched atop one of the roll-out decks is a Jeep Wrangler - talk about product placement. This token Wrangler quickly becomes a skate obstacle. If only this massive scale had been maintained throughout the flick. Alas...
Like I said, this will be one of the best skateboard videos you'll see for quite some time. Justin Figueroa opens with the first part and the skating gets better and better. Wait until you see what David Ly has in store. This kid is sick and has insane energy. Everything he hits, he does with power and aggression - cool as hell to watch this kid skate. His part opens with a yelping wail at a security guard. I think a Mike V approach would have been better...
The X-Games may think they control (or understand) skateboarding by trying to remove vert from the event (does anyone even watch this thing?). But Tony Hawk has no intention of letting us forget about vert as though we'd also forgotten the ‘80s. He kills an indoor half pipe giving much credibility to those who go vertical. If you like being horizontal, better it be with your friend's sister... and maybe one or two of her friends. Anyway... go skate some vert. After watching the vert-master Birdman, you'll wanna climb some tranny - a ramp... not some dick-tucking she-beast.
At 55 minutes plus a slew of bonus stuff, The Beginning is a slick flick that should be a part of your library. Yeah, buy it, don't just watch gritty footage pirated on youTube.
