It's been tried many times, but making a movie with a skateboard theme always fails. These movies always seems to suck in a very specific way. Sure, they'll sprinkle in some hot chicks and a stunt double to do some skating, but the final result is crap. Hollywood just doesn't get the sport or culture of skateboarding. That's probably a good thing, but it makes for lousy entertainment. Hollywood has this preconceived notion of "cool" and blatantly refuses to change it, update it or listen to countless millions who laugh at the crap hollywood spews forth in the name of box-office revenue.

Christian Slater in Gleaming The Cube

But in the sea of horrible sk8 movies is Gleaming The Cube - the savior o sk8 flicks from Hollywood. Don't get me wrong, it sucks, but in such a good way. Maybe its the Jack Nicholson wanna-be voice and mannerisms of Christian Slater. Or his bad-ass - remember all the kids I killed in "Heathers"? - nature. I can't pinpoint the redeeming issue, but this movie saves skateboarding from all the other crappy sk8 films.

In saving us from the real attrocities, like "Grind", I had to give it 3 stars. Its devinitely worth a rental fee, but don't try this one sober.
