Lucky 13 for the Skate Park of Tampa's huge contest - complete with all the usual festivities, atrocities and tons of pro and amature skaters. Oh yeah, lots of hot chicks show up as well. A few girls have entered in the past, but it's pretty much a guy-driven event.

When you think about it, the Skate Park of Tampa is just a bunch of ramps and obstacles housed in a big warehouse... and some outdoor ramps as well. So, what's the attraction? Why do all the pros descend on Tampa for this event?

For one, it's a Winter event (every January) and Florida beats the hell outta New England when it comes to Winter weather, but mostly it's the event itself and the way it's hosted. Lots of shops have contests. How many of them grow to this level and release films of the event itself? Hardly any. Personally, I think the SPOT guys have dialed in on a complete experience that exudes sk8 by being created by and for skaters. That feeling always comes across on the DVDs.

The Weekend Events

There's an intro montage of everyone taking practice runs. I sort of wish they'd come up with some new camera angles - maybe hang from the ceiling or something. The annual Moat Race is for those who enjoy slogging through a deep trough (probably filled with sewage) to see who can cross the finish line first. This event seems geared for those who are too young to care and those too drunk to care. Sobriety doesn't seem to have any effect on the chances of winning - fighting does.

At 25 minutes, you feel as though a little more could have been captured for a full presentation of what goes down there. There is a lot of bonus stuff, but I think they could still do more to capture what a weekend at the Tampa Am is really like. There's a lot of cultural happenings (loosely defined) that would really round out all the skate footage.

And the winners were...

Street Finals

  1. Cody McEntire
  2. Keegan Sauder
  3. Willy Akers

Vert Finals

  1. Alex Perelson
  2. Ben Hatchell
  3. Alan Young

Zero's Best Trick Contest

  1. Adam Dyet
  2. Sierra Fellers
  3. Tyrell Robinson

Bonus Stuff

Check out some of the info they dole out about how they put this event together. Considering how few staffers they enlist, this is a huge feat to pull off. And to do it so successfully every year!
