"Inside" is the new "Outside" - Dubai takes snowboarding out of the desert and into the mall

Dubai indoor snowboarding at the mall - outside shot

If I told you the above structure was located in a desert environment, you wouldn't be too surprised. By the time I told you it was a shopping mall you'd probably cut me off and ask, "What the Hell is that thing?"

What if I told you it was an indoor ski slope in Dubai where the temperature varies from 75° to 105° Fahrenheit during the year?

That's right. That bizarre looking metal tube houses an indoor "mountain" complete with snow and a chair lift. Better still, it's at the mall which must make for an interesting desert contrast. Outside it's 90°, but from the air conditioned shopping mall you can see a winter wonderland.

In a single day in dubai, you can experience everything from rugged mountains and sand dunes to sandy beaches and lush green parks, from dusty villages to luxurious residential districts and from ancient houses with wind towers to ultra- modern shopping malls. Now a new activity has been added: skiing and snowboarding.

Ski Dubai in Dubai Emirates Mall started in December 2005 is the worlds third largest indoor ski slope, measuring 400 meters and using 6000 tons of snow. Ski Dubai resort is the first Dubai indoor ski slope to open. A second Dubai indoor ski slope is the Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome in Dubailand which is due to open in 2008. It will provide a great attraction, featuring a revolving ski slope, an artificial mountain range, an ice bridge, a cable lift, a snow maze, an ice slide, polar bears cold water-aquaria and special sound and light effects.

I understand the benefits to indoor tennis courts so people can play in the Winter and crappy weather. I also get the financial gain of having larger indoor stadiums for baseball, football and so forth. Why you need an indoor ski slope is beyond me. The novelty value is high, but once that's over with... who cares? I suppose there will always be a new batch of tourists who want to ogle it for a while.

If you're planning a snowboarding vacation, I'd opt for something a little more challenging and diverse. If you like to shop and be able to take a quick run, then this may be the place for you.

Never underestimate human creativity. Nothing is impossible... some things just cost more.
