It doesn't take much skill to hang out with your wang out. But if you're gonna rock out with your cock out, that's a whole other situation. Some players can't manage to keep their axe in tune while others become legends like Randy Rhodes or Eddie Van Halen. It all depends on what you bring to it. Kinda like skateboarding...

Some people are content to push mongo from one end of their neighbor's driveway to the other (cuz it's paved unlike theirs) and some are dying to hit a mega-ramp like Danny Way or Bob Burnquist.

If your goal is to be the next legend, you don't want to start out with crappy equipment. You won't be cheered on center stage with a $25 guitar any more than you can survive a handrail on a $25 skateboard. You don't have to spend a lot of money to get a decent board. What you want to avoid is an inferior one that will give-out when you need it to hold up. Skate accidents can put you off your feet and wheels for months if a cheap-ass board splinters when you land.

Your local skate shop is the best place to find quality advice and equipment. Don't try to save a few bucks by buying a cheap board at a discount store. That money you saved is peanuts compared to your healthcare deductible. Get hooked up right at your local independent skate shop. They need your support so they can stay in business and propel your local scene into the future. Demos don't happen by themselves!

Uninformed skaters/consumers need your help. You can lend a hand and help support local skate shops by downloading these SYLSS "Crappy Skateboard" WARNING LABELS (4-up PDF files) and stick 'em on those crappy products you encounter in the mall, discount stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores.

Only independent skateboard shops sell quality products that won't break or fall apart in the first 10 minutes of use. Boards purchased from crappy department stores and gluttonous box-stores are unsafe and will usually result in unnecessary injuries.

Your local skate shop is the only place that cares about you and ensuring you get high quality equipment. Department stores, toy stores and sporting goods stores only want your money. Independent skate shops want to keep you as a customer by helping you get the best products available.
