Skateboarding DVD Video Review: Curb Dogs vol. 1
Director:
Studio:
Released: 1986 / 2002 on DVD
Rating: 3 Stars
Staring:
Joe Johnson, Kevin Staab, Dave Vanderspek, Piere Welinder.
I still recall the day I found Curb Dogs at my local video rental joint. Before I knew about skate videos or Stacy Peralta's video revolution with the Bones Brigade, I found this little gem sitting on the shelf yelling, "Rent me, dammit!" Naturally, I felt compelled to obey.
It was a small rental shop in Bronxville, NY and they had - to my amazement - quite a large selection of skate videos, but this one jumped out at me. Could anyone resist the allure of 80's fashion - bright clashing colors, berets and insane hi-tops? Hell no - and at the time I wanted to immerse myself in all of it. Still do... sort of.
Discovering this title was available on DVD, I had to have it and relive my former days before I'd aged into an old old-school skater. I still have my VHS copy.
But lets get serious for a second... This video is 30 minutes of crap you'd be embarrassed to see let alone perform yourself. Like all endeavors, and stuff, skateboarding has evolved into a technical sport that still retains an element of fun. Curb Dogs is fun. It's old school, but its fun. Probably the only reason I gave it 3 stars is for sentimental value alone. It was my first exposure to sk8 videos and it has stuck in my mind ever since. I can still hum the theme song - sad, but true.
