Al Gore.

Is this a skateboarding video? No.

Are there any skaters in it? No.

WTF? I'm glad you asked.

Everything I knew about global warming, I knew from the term itself... The planet is warming up. Maybe as an East Coast skater, I'll be able to skate a few more weeks each year before the snow settles in. By the same logic, my passion for snowboarding may be in danger. Essentially, I knew very little about global warming and why I should give a damn about a few degrees of temperature here and there.

I'm not particularly interested in buying a hybrid car or insanely expensive light bulbs. I think saving energy is as important as not wasting energy, but does that really solve any global problems? Apparently it does.

Remember the last lecture you sat through in school wondering why you had to be there as you day-dreamed about the 500 other things you'd rather be doing? Skateboarding, perhaps? Remember the feeling of ultimate boredom as the clock seemed to slow to a crawl? An Inconvenient Truth may be the most important movie you've ever seen. On a similar level, it may bore you to tears. It's essentially a video of the lectures Al Gore does to promote global warming awareness.

Remember when Al Gore became President of the United States in 2000 (for about ten minutes)? George Bush (the stupidest man on the planet) promptly had that issue solved as he stole the presidency for himself and his treasonous cronies who have gone on to rob America of everything she once offered her citizens. OK, I really don't want to get off on a political rant, but George Bush will go down in history as the worst thing to have happened to America in recent decades.

Despite this tragedy, Al Gore has made it his personal goal to bring awareness to the perils of global warming. Read up on the topic. It's a lot scarier and immediate than you may think.

An obvious side effect of global warming is the melting of ice, like that found at both Poles. This slowly increases sea level. Anyone own an ocean-front home? Uh oh... that may not be a good investment over the next decade. But that's not all that happens. Over time science has seen other things that happen when the Earth's temperature has risen.

Did you see the movie, Ice Age? Weren't those little CGI critters cute? Well, actual ice ages have followed in the wake of previous warming cycles. So why all the hoopla now?

Previous warming cycles and ice ages were natural phenomenons. Our current warming trend is man-made. We (yes, both you and I) are creating this warming trend and all the horrific attributes that come along for the ride... like another ice age.

The good new is that we can reverse it. Just as we caused it, we can change it - and we can change it by doing little things. We don't have to move mountains, we just all (yes, everyone) need to conserve more energy and waste less of it. There's a ton of info out there. Search online and see what you can do to help.

Al Gore won an Academy Award (stupid gold Oscar statue) for Best Documentary on Feb. 25, 2007. Maybe now people will pay attention to what he has to say about the planet. Being a former Vice-President and Presidential candidate didn't seem to register with too many people. I'll bet people would really heed his warnings if he'd won "Best Dressed”.

Global Warming & Skateboarding

The winter of 2006/07 got off to a rough start for ski resorts. Record temperatures lasted through December 2006. On Christmas day, my local outdoor park in Massachusetts looked and felt like a scene from a warm Spring day. The temp was 50° and the park was packed with riders tearing it up on Jesus' birthday.

Just remember that an ice age will totally screw up any skate session. You might think you can build a killer pipe out of ice, but skatelite is still the preferred topping.
