I'd like to first point out that although purposely misspelled with a leading "K" the word chronicles is further misspelled as, Kronichles, with and extra "H". When sourcing info on the web, it got fairly tedious entering multiple spellings when some of the web-d00ds out there should have turned off spell-check and looked at the damn box cover! Now that my rant is over... what a great film!!
After watching Krooked Kronichles and examining the 40 page booklet that was included, I have to ask if Gonz is an entrepreneur, an artist or a skater... or out of his mind. "All of the above" seems to be the resounding answer. Yet from the whacky myriad of ideas and creativity, Krooked Kronichles comes together as a great work (I'd have said film, but ya gotta leave the Art window open on this one).
This two-disc set is packed with stuff. Plenty of skating, skits, interviews and things that make you stop and think - I'm not sure what you'll think about, but some of Gonz' content will get your mind humming (perhaps in a disturbing fashion). The film has traditional parts by Krooked pros (Mark Gonzales, Dan Drehobl) and two newer Ams (Van Wastell and Bobby Worrest). Don't worry about 2 of the 4 main parts being Ams. The Gonz hand-picked them and did so for a reason - they can skate with sick style and consistency. It's interspersed with skits and the Gonz mouthing off about all sorts of things. And you may spot Spike Jonze doing a trick.
There are two guest montages featuring a mix of: Donny Barley, Zered Bassett, Caswell Berry, Jake Brown, John Cardiel, Ron Chatman, Jason Dill, Dustin Dolling, Eric Dressen, Pat Duffy, Cairo Foster, TG, Shiloh Greathouse, Christian Hosoi, Marc Johnson, Rudy Johnson, James Kelch, Guy Mariano, Jesse Martinez, Lance Moutain, Chad Muska, Ricky Oyola, Matt Rodriguez, Daewon Song, Malcom Watson, Wura.
You'll also find various shorts by: Spike Jonze, Dan Vellucci, Neckface, Mat Obrien, Rich Jacobs and Jason Goodman.
You can't talk about Krooked Kronichles without adequate mention of the Gonz. His touch is so prevalent throughout the whole thing - it reeks of him (in a good way). If you bumped into him on the street you might find yourself gazing at a scruffy guy with an attitude and a matching opinion about everything. He seems to have mastered the art of the rant as he bestows his philosophies with disgruntled haste.
I've never me the guy, but I get the sense that once you get past his exterior, his artistry would flood your senses. He's obviously very passionate about all his work and it shows in everything he does - sometimes positively, other times not. He seems like the stereotypical artist, but his skater's edge shows through making him one of the most revered skaters in the industry. His defiance combined with creativity makes a unique outcome to everything he does. I'm going to stop all this now before I start to sound oddly gay about Mark Gonzales - cuz I'm not (gay, that is).
As an aside, I have to mention NeckFace. He's got a short segment on the bonus disc. God bless anyone who can turn sidebar scrawls into huge works of art. If Gonz is an artist and NeckFace is an artist... dammit, I want to be an artist!
