Skateboarding DVD Video Review:Tony Hawk's Trick Tips Vol. 1 - Skateboard Basics
Director: Morgan Stone
Studio: 900 Films
Released: 2000
Rating: 4 Stars
Staring:
Tony Hawk, Kris Markovich and Brian Sumner.
If you're going to learn the basics of skateboarding, who better to learn from than skateboarding's prime spokesman, Tony Hawk? On the other hand... can you really improve your skating by watching TV? Both points are arguable, but there are two groups that this sort of video will help out.
- Those who don't really understand the mechanics of certain tricks will like the slow-mo shots and verbal descriptions.
- Those who are not familiar with the difference between a kick-flip and nose-slide will be able to get a grip on the naming conventions.
For some odd reason this video was shot on both 16mm and 35mm film. I guess you film-buffs will get a charge out of that trinket of knowledge.
The video starts at the Boardroom in Los Angeles - which would be a much more clever shop title if it weren't so cliché. At the Boardroom, Stan - the manager - stands around as Tony talks us through the parts of a skateboard and how to go about buying them. Tony's best advice is to stay out of toy stores. Always buy skate equipment from skate shops that carry real brands and quality products. Many thanks to Stan for his non-existent commentary on the purchase and set-up of skateboards.
The Tricks

- Ollie 180
- Shove-It

- Heel Flip
Ramps
Tony and Kris Markovich guide us through:
- Pumping (on a ramp - not your friend's sister)
- Kick Turn
- Dropping In
- Rock To Fakie
Rails
Tony and Brian Sumner guide us through:
- Board Slide
- Lip Slide
- 50-50
Ledges
Tony and Brian Sumner guide us through:
- Nose Slide
- Tail Slide

At the close you will be wildly frustrated with all the stuff you now have to go out and learn. This DVD is pretty helpful for the right type of person. If you don't have someone to help you learn new tricks, this may be a place to start. Or you might just get a kick out of all the antics they also put on the disc.
