The DIY attitude prevails with the wily team at Roughneck Hardware. When you think about sk8 hardware, you think of nuts and bolts and wonder if sales might not be better at Home Depot rather than your local skate shop. I don't know a lot about sales, but these guys created an awesome video - Upside Down and Backwards. This flick's soundtrack is loaded with Rap and Metal carnage - none of that hip-hop crap, just raging old-school style rap - and amazing skating by a wide variety of pros.
With impromptu contests and spur of the moment events, they seem to have a knack for creating a buzz in record time. How many street events have YOU hosted that featured grilling hotdogs on the sidewalk next to your event as cops approach the crowd in full riot gear? Welcome to the San Francisco owned by the Roughneck Hardware team.
The hills of San Fran are legendary. Most of us wouldn't want to ride a bike down these steeps let alone bomb ‘em on a skateboard. Using the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) bus system, bombing doesn't involve long uphill walks - just hop the bus. I'm sure the bus drivers groan when they see a ton of kids with sk8s waiting at the bus stop.
So, if i get one of C1rca's funky full zip hoodies and I want to get all crazy and mix ‘n match with another pattern I have to buy two of the damn things. That's pretty dang clever. Why stoke a kid into buying one hoodie when you can push them easily into buying 2. I wish I'd thought of it... good for revenue and it's a cool idea.
One of their spontaneous contests involved a simple ledge that drew a huge number of onlookers and skaters. Of course the cops showed up, but the crowd got a great show beforehand.
The glory hole segment takes the Roughneck team to the high seas... Well, they used rafts to get riders and equipment through a quarry to a massive pipe. Along with coolers and sk8s, they also shuttled a bicycle. Shortly we see them using the bike, with a tow rope, to accelerate riders into the end of the tunnel for maximum climb. As well as being clever, they all seemed to be having a blast. It's always cool to see a sk8 team having fun and not just going through the motions to get footy on tape. These guys rocked it!
At only 25 minutes, you feel as though Upside Down and Backwards gave a really good look at Roughneck and it's concrete habitat.
